Gas electrodes according to the invention comprise a layer of porous conducting material (1) having a catalyst on its pore surfaces, an adjoining layer (2) of smaller pore size made of hydrophilic fibrous material and perforated members (4) holding layer 2 against layer 1. Layer 1 may be of C or Ni impregnated with Ni, Pd or Pt catalyst. Layer 2 may be of glass or asbestos and have a minimum thickness of 0À1 mm. Layer 2 may be applied to layer 1 by filtering a glutinuous suspension of fibres through layer 1 under suction. In a particular embodiment shown in part in Fig. 1, two such electrodes are separated by electrolyte space 3 and held in position by perforated metal spring members 4 and 8. The cell is bounded by metal covers 5 welded to layers 1 at 6. The edges are sealed by annular members 9, through which conduits carry reactants and electrolyte to and from the cell. Conduit 10 shown carries a gas reactant and is linked to gas space 7 by conduit 11. A battery of abutting cells of this type are joined electrically in series but the reactants flow through in parallel. The gas pressures are controlled so that whilst layer 2 is saturated with electrolyte, none enters the gas spaces. Reactants specified are H 2 and O 2 . Electrolytes specified are KOH and acids.
