PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polarized light separation element in which failures caused by defective adhesion between an optically isotropic substrate and an optically anisotropic film can be decreased. SOLUTION: The polarized light separation element 1 is prepared by forming an optically anisotropic film 2 on an optically isotropic substrate 3, forming a periodical structure with recesses and projections on the surface of the film 2, filling the recesses with a transparent material 6 having the same refractive index as one of the refractive indices for ordinary rays and extraordinary rays of the optically anisotropic film 2. In this element 1, the all region on the whole side faces of the optically anisotropic film 2 are covered with the material 6 so that the adhesion property between the optically isotropic substrate 3 and the optically anisotropic film 2 is improved because the material 6 completely covers the whole side faces of the film 2 and tightly adheres to the optically isotropic substrate 3. Thereby, failures caused by defective adhesion can be decreased. |
