PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a stereospecific anionic polymerization method for styrene whereby the stereospecificity of chains can be controlled in a range wherein the transition from a structure having a strong isotactic tendency to a structure having a strong syndiotactic tendency gradually occurs. SOLUTION: A styrene monomer is brought into contact, in a solvent, with a catalyst containing (I) an alkali derivative represented by formula (I): *R-X-Mt (R is an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl; X is C or a heteroatom such as O, N or S; and Mt is an alkali or alkaline earth metal) or formula (II): *R'-Mg-X-R" (R' and R" are each an optionally substituted alkyl, cycloalkyl or aryl; X is C or a hetroatom such as O, N or S) and (II) an alkylmagnesium derivative.
