The procedure for demolishing a Cowper (hot blast) oven (C) containing pollutant materials, especially asbestos-based, consists of first constructing an embankment (R) of rubble with a top layer of a shock absorbing material such as earth, clay or sand, up to the level of the top of the oven's concrete base (B). The oven is then filled with a self-hardening material such as lightweight concrete, pumped in stages in liquid form through the top hopper after breaking through refractory plugs, and is brought down onto the embankment in one piece with the aid of demolition charges round the base, allowing it to be safely dismantled.
|
