A cylindrical pressure vessel 12 is divided by a retractable partition 26 into two sections 24, 25 each of which includes independent pressurizing means. Cans of food 15 on trays 14 are loaded through a door 18 into the first section 24 wherein they are heated with steam under pressure. After a predetermined time, the door 22 of the previously emptied second section 25 having been closed and the pressure in this section 25 having been raised by means of compressed air to equal that in the first section 24, the partition 26 is retracted and a brake 36 released allowing the trays 14 to roll on a conveyer 16 into the section 25. The cans 15, now in the second section 25, are cooled by water sprays or cold air while the pressure therein is controlled, and simultaneously further cans 15 are introduced and treated in the first section 24.
