PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve rigidity of a steering column of an impact absorbing type steering device. SOLUTION: In the impact absorbing type steering device 1, the steering column 4 has a cylindrical outer jacket 10 and inner jacket 11 fit together by fitting parts 31 and 41. In a collision, both jackets 10 and 11 mutually slide and absorb impact energy. A caulking part 32 comprising a protrusion is formed on an inner circumference 33 of the outer jacket 10, and the caulking part 32 is pressed against an outer circumference 44 of the inner jacket 11 so as to allow a relative movement of the inner jacket 11 only in impact absorption. A shape of the caulking part 32 is relatively long in an axial direction of the outer jacket 10, and it is relatively short in a circumferential direction. By this, the caulking part 32 can be suppressed within a narrow range in the circumferential direction in a cross section of the outer jacket 10, and rigidity of the outer jacket 10, and as a result, the rigidity of the steering column 4 can be enhanced. |
