PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a chiral dopant having characteristics such that helical twist power(HTP) is large and the pitch of induced helices becomes short according to a temperature rise. SOLUTION: This optically active compound is represented by the following general formula (1) [wherein, n is 0 or an integer of 1-5; A is selected from a structural formula group consisting of a single bond (-), Ph and Cy (Ph denotes 1,4-phenylene group; and Cy denotes trans-1,4-cyclohexylene group) when n is 0; and A is selected from a structural formula group consisting of a single bond (-), COO, Cy, Ph, O-Ph and COO-Ph (Ph and Cy are each the same as described in A); X is hydrogen atom or fluorine atom; C* is asymmetric carbon atom]. Thereby, the chiral dopant having the characteristics such that the HTP is large and the pitch of induced helices becomes short according to the temperature rise is obtained.
