PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a protective mask of a cylinder bore during a heat coating which is suitable or repeated uses, easily applicable, and capable of being started without any pollution to the engine block or the environment with coating particles, and a method therefor. SOLUTION: The protective mask includes a hollow cylindrical protective mask member which is selected in relation to the diameter of the cylinder bore with the inside diameter thereof heat-coated. The protective mask member includes a tubular outer sleeve and an insertion member to the outer sleeve. The insertion member is loosely inserted in the outer sleeve and perpendicularly movable to the outer sleeve. A stopping member for preventing the insertion member from dropping-off is provided on the insertion member.
