PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide glass with which a photoelastic constant can be properly set and the low photoelasticity is made compatible with a low refractive index and manufacturing is easy, and a method for manufacturing the same. SOLUTION: The photoelastic constant is given as a function of a molar ratio and when the molar ratio of a mesh modification component and a mesh formation component is determined, the photoelastic constant is easily obtained, by which raw materials are properly regulated in such a manner that the molar ratio of the mesh modification component and the mesh formation component attains a prescribed value and a desired photoelastic constant corresponding to the value of the molar ratio can be obtained. the photoelastic constant of the glass can be set at a desired value according to applications.
