Mono(hydroxyalkyl)urea and oxazolidone crosslinking agents

Mono(hydroxyalkyl)urea or 2-oxazolidone replaces formaldehyde-based crosslinking agents in compositions for making synthetic polymers. A composition comprises: (1) a polyfunctional compound comprising at least two carboxyl and/or anhydride functional groups; and (2) a crosslinking agent selected from a mono(hydroxyalkyl)urea comprising a single urea group and a single hydroxyl group with at least two carbon atoms between them, and 2-oxazolidone.
