A method of indicating the nature of a gas stored in a gas cylinder (11, Fig.1) comprises securing a polymeric ring 20 around the cylinder, adjacent to its shoulder (14, Fig 1). The ring has two arcuate sectors 21, 22 formed from two different colour polymers, the colours being used to identify the nature of the gas stored in the cylinder. The ring contracts in use to grip the cylinder in the shoulder region. The second coloured polymer 22 may be over-moulded onto a continuous first base ring having the first colour 21. Portions of the first ring may project through the second colour polymer to form alphanumeric indicia 23 indicating the nature of the gas in the container. A plurality of such rings (20, 20A, Fig 4) may be spaced upon the length of the container. The first colour ring of the device may have a handle (31, Fig 4) formed integrally thereon. An identification device for carrying out the method described above is also claimed.
