PURPOSE: A liquid crystal display device is provided to lower a black voltage by controlling a retardation value of compensating films instead of changing alignment films or liquid crystal, without any reduction of transmissivity in the white state. CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal display device includes first and second insulating substrates(11,12) facing each other, first and second alignment films formed on facing surfaces of the first and second substrates, first and second WV(Wide Viewing) films(61,62) attached to the other surfaces of the substrates, first and second compensating films(71,72) attached to the first and second WV films, first and second polarization plates attached to the first and second compensating films, and a liquid crystal layer between the substrates, wherein slow axes(73,74) of the first and second compensating films are respectively perpendicular to rubbing directions(53,54) of the first and second alignment films, and perpendicular to orientation axes(63,64) of the first and second WV films, and a retardation value of the first and second compensating films is 10-40nm.
