A braking device has a rod 1 surrounded by a sleeve 9, either said rod or said sleeve being adapted to be articulated between two relatively movable parts of an article to which the braking device is to be fitted, the braking effect of said device being continuously variable in one direction only of movement of the rod with respect to the sleeve, whilst the corresponding movement in the opposite direction remains substantially unimpeded, wherein there is arranged between the rod and the sleeve a braided sheath 17 secured by one end 15 to the sleeve, said sheath consisting of stiff but resilient threads and the diameter of the sheath, when this latter is unstressed in the longitudinal direction, being somewhat smaller than the diameter of the rod, and said sleeve having an adjusting member 19 which cooperates with the free end 16 of the sheath to vary the diameter thereof. As shown the member 19 is a cap having a spin and slot connection with the sleeve but in a modification it can have a screw-threaded connection with the sleeve. The sheath is made of plastics threads. The device can control the movement of cabinet flaps, casement windows or doors. |
