The invention comprises a process for preparing a malonic acid hydrazide of formula or a salt thereof, wherein R 1 is (a) a straightchain, branched-chain or monocyclic alkyl or alkenyl radical having up to 10 carbon atoms, (b) a radical (a) interrupted by an oxygen, sulphur or nitrogen atom, or (c) an aryl or aralkyl radical optionally substituted by halogen or an hydroxy, C 1-3 alkoxy, nitro, amino or dialkylamino group, and Ar is a phenyl radical optionally substituted by halogen or C 1-3 alkyl or alkoxy groups, by reaction of a malonic acid derivative of formula wherein X is a halogen atom and Y is an hydroxy, C 1-3 alkoxy or aralkoxy group, with a hydrazine of formula wherein R 2 is hydrogen or the acyl radical of a saturated or unsaturated aliphatic carboxylic acid having up to 6 carbon atoms, a carbalkoxyacyl radical or the benzoyl radical, in an inert organic solvent at a temperature up to 90‹ C., and saponifying the product.
