Complex salts of alkyl phenols and alkyl phenol sulphides are prepared by (1) reacting an alkyl phenol sulphide with a metallizing agent consisting of a metal alcoholate or a metal oxide used in the presence of an aliphatic alcohol, or reacting an alkyl phenol with a similar metallizing agent, other than a calcium metallizing agent, and (2) carbonating the product of (1) by treatment with carbon dioxide, prior to the removal of the said alcohol or the alcohol released from the metal alcoholate. Alkyl phenol sulphides, to which the process is particularly applicable, are those of formula in which R is a C 5 -C 24 alkyl radical, x is 1, 2, 3 or 4, y is 0, 1, 2 or 3 and z is 1 or 2. Alkyl phenols which may be used in the process are those of formula in which R and x are as defined above. The metal alcoholates and oxides used are preferably those of barium, calcium, magnesium and sodium. When the starting material is an alkyl phenol the metallizing agent used is preferably barium oxide and methanol or barium methanolate. When the starting material is an alkyl phenol sulphide the preferred metallizing agents are barium oxide or calcium oxide with methanol or barium methanolate or calcium methanolide.
