PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a braking process, capable of braking a rotary internal combustion engine by a braking force larger than that of known technologies. SOLUTION: The braking process for the rotary internal combustion engine having at least one cylinder 1, including a reciprocating piston 2 and at least one first and second gas valves 13 and 14, comprises the steps of cutting out the supply of fuel to the internal combustion engine, maintaining at least one of first valves 13 in a closed state during the braking process, and maintaining at least one of second valves 14 in a closed state, while the piston 2 is moved from a first position near the bottom dead center thereof to a second position near the top dead center thereof in at least one two-stroke braking cycle and maintaining in open state, at least in the first portion during movement, from the second position to the first position.
