PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prevent a magnetic head from being damaged by being caught of the magnetic head in the end part of a medium because of a difference in size of the medium. SOLUTION: A magnetic recording device 1 is provided with a magnetic head 7 which is mounted on a reciprocated carriage 8 and is energized toward a magnetic recording part A1 formed on the surface of a medium A to read data stored in the magnetic recording part A1 and/or write data in the magnetic recording part A1. The magnetic head 7 is guided to a retreat position away from the magnetic recording part A1 when the carriage 8 is moved within a range where the magnetic head 7 is not brought into contact with the magnetic recording part A1, and a retreat guide part 29 which holds the magnetic head 7 in the retreat position is so provided that its position can be freely controlled in the moving direction of the carriage 8, and the position of the retreat guide part 29 is controlled in accordance with the width in the data read/write direction of the magnetic recording part A1 of the medium A. |
