PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a perpendicular magnetic recording medium which exhibits excellent thermal stability in the recording magnetic domain where high density recording is carried out and of which the information can be reproduced with low noise and high S/N. SOLUTION: The magnetic recording medium is provided with an intrasurface soft magnetism layer 3, a perpendicular soft magnetism layer 4 and a recording layer 5 on a substrate 1. The magnetic flux from a recording magnetic domain 15 of the recording layer 5 first becomes aslant in the perpendicular soft magnetism layer 4, and is then oriented to an intrasurface direction in the intrasurface soft magnetism layer 3. Thus a magnetic loop of a horseshoe shape is easily formed between the intrasurface magnetism layer 3 and the recording layer 5. Consequently, the recording magnetic domain of the recording layer 5 is more stabilized than before. Furthermore, since the magnetic fluctuation of the intrasurface magnetism layer 3 is reduced and noise is made smaller, information can be reproduced with high S/N.
