PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a roof which can be laid without a worker climbing the roof. SOLUTION: A guide rope 9 arranged inside a guide rail 2 is wound by a sheet winding drum 14 and drum 15. A sheet 7 is stretched between a pair of guide rails through the guide ropes 9. The sheet 7 is wound on the sheet winding drum 14. While putting the sheet winding drum 14 in winding-out operation and the winding drum 15 in winding operation from a state before laying a roof, the sheet 7 is moved upward to cover a roof part 5, thus laying the roof. After the roof is laid, the movement of the sheet 7 is stopped. Tension wires 16, 22 are then pulled to apply tension to the guide ropes 9, 9. The sheet 7 can thereby be stretched without becoming loose in the width direction and the length direction.
