PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a packet transfer device with a small-sized enclosure that quickly copes with diversified access and service systems of the Internet. SOLUTION: The packet transfer device comprises a basic section placed in the enclosure and an extension section placed at the outside of the enclosure. The basic section is provided with a common processing function independently of the access system and the service class, an interface containing an internet access channel, and a plurality of interface boards adapted to a particular access system enough to permit a small hardware scale so as to act only itself like the packet transfer device, and the extension section carries out processing functions particular to the access system and the service class.
