The method involves engaging the clutch if the brake is operated and/or the driver presses on the accelerator pedal. Before engaging the clutch the revolution rate of the gearbox drive shaft or a corresponding parameter representing it is detected and the engine speed is regulated so that both speeds coincide or are equalized to end the coasting phase.
