PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To set focus biases adequate for land tracks and groove tracks, respectively. SOLUTION: A mark of 2T which is the shortest mark length is detected and the amplitude of a corresponding RF signal is outputted to an analog-to- digital converter in a step S1. The amplitude of the RF signal is digitalized and a pull in signal indicating reflectivity is digitalized in a step S2. The amplitude of the digitalized RF signal is normalized by the digitalized pull in signal in a step S3. The focus biases are so set that the amplitude of the normalized RF signal attains the maximum width.
