PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a thin film magnetic head capable of bringing an antiferromagnetic layer into direct contact with a free magnetic layer to assure its adhesion and simplifying the formation of each film, and to provide its manufacturing method. SOLUTION: A first antiferromagnetic layer 10 is formed on a lower gap layer 1. A substrate layer 2, a free magnetic layer 3, a nonmagnetic conductive layer 5, a fixed magnetic layer 6, and a second antiferromagnetic layer 7 are laminated in this order thereon. Since the free magnetic layer 3 is formed after the formation of the first antiferromagnetic layer 10, adhesion is assured between the first antiferromagnetic layer 10 and the free magnetic layer 3. As the direction of the magnetization of the free layer 3 is changed by an external magnetic field, an electric resistance is also changed, making the external magnetic field detected. Since the free magnetic layer 3 is formed in a single magnetic domain in an X direction by the first antiferromagnetic layer 10, Barkhausen noise is reduced.
