PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To prepare an aqueous resin dispersion which excels in polymerization stability and storage stability and has low thixotropic properties and excellent alkali thickening properties. SOLUTION: This aqueous resin dispersion comprises a polymer having an acid value of 50-400 mgKOH/g and a weight average molecular weight of 20,000-200,000, and has a viscosity of 20 mass% the above polymer present at 25 deg.C of <=1,000 mPas, an increase in viscosity at the time of neutralization by 10-100 times, and simultaneously, a viscosity ratio (pH=9/pH=7) at pH=7 and pH=9 in the range of 1 to 10.
