PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for executing compensation for offset between the reading element and the recording element of a magnetic head in a disk drive and for generating an optimal reading timing, and a device using the method. SOLUTION: A hard disk drive 10 is provided with a magnetic disk 12, a spindle motor 14 for rotating the magnetic disk 12, a magnetic head 20 having a recording element 22 and a reading element 24 separated by offset and adapted to record/read information in/from the magnetic disk 12, and an electric circuit for enabling the reading element by an offset operation. The magnetic disk 12 includes a synchronous byte, and the offset is decided by a difference between a synchronous byte position and an actual synchronous byte position.
