PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method capable of readily producing a halogen-containing aromatic carboxylic acid compound which is useful as a raw material for halogen-containing aromatic acid dianhydride useful as an intermediate raw material for circuit board materials, photosensitive materials, liquid crystal materials, etc., in high purity and simple operation. SOLUTION: This method for producing the halogen-containing aromatic carboxylic acid compound comprises hydrolyzing a halogen-containing an aromatic tetranitrile represented by the formula (1) by using an acid in an organic solvent.
