The conductors 14, 20 electrode 12 and electrolyte 10 are supported by a refractory body 4 so that when the cell is inserted in the fluid to be measured the end of electrolyte 10 and the conductor 20 are in contact with the fluid and form a galvanic cell. Thermocouple 32 may also be mounted in the refractory body 4 and the leads of the conductors 14, 20 and thermocouple are connected to meter 48. The cell may be releasably mounted on the end of a lance, which includes a connector for separably connecting with a connector connected to the leads, Fig. 2, (not shown). Steel caps 40, 42 protect the opposite end of the cell as it is immersed in the molten liquid and are only melted by the molten steel in the furnace. The solid electrolyte may be stabilized ZrO2 (including CaO or MgO); ThO2 including Y2O3; Al2 O3 or MgO. The reference electrode may be Cr-Cr2 O3; Mo-MoO2; Ta-TaO2; W-WO2; Ni-NiO; Fe-FeO or Co-CoO. If the fluid being tested is ferrous suitable conductor materials are Mo; Pt; Rh; Pt and Rh; W; Ta; W and Re; Cr and alloys thereof, if non-ferrous metals Ni; Co; Fe; Cu; Al; Sn; Zn; Mg and if a gas Al, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni, Co and Sn.
