A screw press for molten plasticized thermoplastics (especially for fibres and films) has an inflow 1, a replaceable slotted or apertured graining plate 3 (see also Figs. 3 and 4, not shown), and an inflow degassing chamber 4 the lower end of which is defined by the screw chamber 6; a vacuum line 12 connects to the chamber 4. The molten raw material enters vertically into the chamber 4 without the aid of a feed mechanism. A replaceable hemispherical or conical baffle 15 may be provided. to increase the surface area of the plastic. There may be heaters 9, 10, 11 and the graining plate and baffle may also be heated. The graining plate may be placed in an entry chamber (16) of greater cross-section than the inflow chamber 4 and upstream thereof (see Fig. 5, not shown).
