A discharge lamp lighting device in which variation in the luminance of the lamp is reduced while prolonging the lifetime even when a small, inexpensive high efficiency lamp is used by accelerating growth of a spot positively thereby lessening arc jump. A discharge lamp control section (101) sets the frequencies of drive control signals A and B for a commutator (109) within such a range as a spot being formed on an electrode constituting a high pressure discharge lamp by arc discharge grows through the oxidation/reducti on cycle of a metal composing the electrode, and shapes the waveform of a curre nt flowing through the high pressure discharge lamp by superposing a triangular wave signal generated based on the drive control signal on a current control signal F over the entire period of the drive control signal such that the pe ak level of the triangular wave signal becomes constant.
