Desulfurization of compressed gas (I) containing sulfur (S) components (II), with simultaneous recovery of S, comprises converting (II) to S by catalytic partial oxidation, in which at least the stages involving mixing with oxygen, direct oxidation to S, condensation of S and absorption of hydrogen sulfide (H2S) are carried out at substantially equal pressure.
