The device has a plate region with an essentially flat region (3) and a funnel region (2) with a neck region (5) in which the bulb is subjected to strain, at least locally, when used for a cathode ray tube. The strain results from the atmospheric pressure on the outside of the bulb and the vacuum inside the bulb. At least part of the flat region has a compressive stress coating where the strain is greatest. AN Independent claim is also included for the following: a cathode ray tube.
