Process for firing or calcining carbon bodies covered with coke packing in a ring chamber oven at above 900 deg C comprises using a coke packing which is additionally covered with a cristobalite- and/or tridymite-rich material containing 1.5-10 wt.% calcium oxide and 90-98.5 weight % silicon dioxide. An Independent claim is also included for a process for the production of a material for covering carbon bodies during firing and calcining. Preferred Features: The material contains more than 50 wt.% cristobalite and tridymite and has a particle size of 2-35 mm. The material is produced from consumed silicate stones.
