A system, device and method for assisting navigation are disclosed. The system comprises at least one positioning support device (108) and a personal portable wireless user device (104). The positioning support device (108) is operable to be placed (600) near a navigation feature (110) and to communicate (602) appropriate navigational information, including absolute position and relative position with respect to a navigational feature. The user device (104) is operable to receive (604) the navigational information and communicate (606) it to a user (102). The method operates to permit users to independently navigate local, overland or underwater areas and is especially useful for persons whose vision may be impaired.
