CHARACTERISATION OF LOW-POWER SHORT PULSES

The invention concerns a method for characterising at least a light pulse which consists in: generating at least another light pulse; delaying those two pulses with respect to each other; combining in a coupler the two thus mutually delayed light pulses. The invention is characterised in that it consists in further generating a continuous light signal with optical frequency different from that of the two pulses, in combining, in a coupler (10), an optical signal resulting from the combination of the two light pulses, before injecting the signal resulting from said combination in the non-linear medium (11); propagating the signal derived from the combination of the two light pulses and of the continuous signal in the medium having a non-linear coefficient of interaction of order three or more; carrying out a spectral analysis of said light signal after it has propagated in said non-linear medium so as to derive therefrom an information on the frequency and/or phase and/or amplitude of the light pulse to be characterised.
