Process for testing the conversion ability of a catalytic element (10) arranged in a vehicle and subjected to an ambient air stream (2) comprises extracting predetermined releasing conditions; determining the values released by sensors (3, 4); comparing the values with each other and deriving parameters which reproduces a non-corrected value for the materials for the conversion ability; weighting the parameters depending on at least one operating parameter of the vehicle; and comparing the weighted parameter with a prescribed threshold value and closing the catalytic element when the threshold value is exceeded. Preferred Features: The operating parameter is coolant temperature, suction air temperature, vehicle speed or the adjusted stage of a cooling fan.
