<p>The present invention relates to a method of selecting at least one 'filler' symbol that is suitable to be transmitted as a Q-mode signal in a XDSL system. In contrast to proposed methods the present method involves: transmitting a number of symbols, recording a power values for each symbol that is transmitted, and selecting, in response to the recorded power value, at least one of said transmitted symbols as a suitable 'filler' symbol. The selection step may more in detail involve comparing of the power value of each symbol with a threshold parameter Tp, and if a symbol has a power value that is lower than the threshold parameter Tp then said symbol is selected as a suitable 'filler' symbol.
