Production of saturated diols by reduction of optionally unsaturated lactones with hydrogen, comprising the use of, as catalyst, a mixture of: (a) Group VIII metal(s) or Group VIII metal compound(s); and (b) Group VI or VII metal carbonyl(s). An Independent claim is also included for 2-ethylheptane-1,5-diol.
