A method and apparatus are provided for monitoring an optical signal (58) from a solid state laser (16). The method includes the steps of providing a planar substrate (52, 66) defined by opposing planar surfaces (80, 82) and a substrate edge (74) that together define a substrate volume that is transparent to an optical signal from the solid state laser (16), disposing the solid state laser (16) on one of the opposing planar surfaces the planar substrate (52, 66) such that a first portion of the optical signal travels directly through the planar substrate (52, 66) substantially orthogonal to the opposing planar surfaces (80, 82) and a second portion (58) of the optical signal is reflected between the opposing planar surfaces (80, 82) of the planar substrate (66) and passes out of the substrate (52, 66) through the substrate edge (74), and disposing an optical detector (30) proximate the edge (74) of the planar substrate (52, 66) to detect the second portion (58) of the optical signal. |
