An all-optical and gate (1400) forms the basis of a switch. Each switch element (1200) has an optical and gate (1202) with an input that is divided into to optical signals (1420). One is delayed with respect to the other. By encoding the input data stream with pulses with suitable delays, the and gate will produce an output. The switch element will only output a pulse when the input pulse separation matches that of the delay built into the switch.
