1,136,046. Foam-cored laminates. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. 24 May, 1967 [21 June, 1966], No. 27619/66. Heading B5N. A method of making a laminate having a foamed plastics core sandwiched between and bonded to two outer facing materials 3 and 6 comprises providing top and bottom co-operating substantially parallel conveying surfaces 1 and 2 forming within supporting plates an extended longitudinal nip, feeding an upper facing material into contact with said top conveying surface and a lower facing material into contact with said bottom conveying surface, supplying to the upper surface of the lower facing material at a location anterior to the nip a reactant mixture adapted to form a foamed plastics core 5, also supplying said foamforming reactant mixture (8) (not necessarily simultaneously) to the under surface of the upper facing material and/or to the upper surface or surfaces of more or more additional boards or reinforcements fed to the nip intermediate to the facing materials, and removing the set foamed laminate from the nip. The process may be used for the preparation of two three-layer laminates or one five-layer laminate. Reinforcements, e.g. honeycomb sheets, arrays of tiles, layers of aggregate and vertical boards (9) may be incorporated in the laminate. Specified foamed plastics materials are polyurethanes, polystyrene, polyvinylidene chloride, epoxy resins, urea-formaldehyde resins and polyethylene. Specified facing materials are paper, paper board, metal sheets and foils, asbestos paper, asbestos sheets, rubber, polyvinyl chloride, resin-bonded glass fibres, melamine-formaldehyde, polystyrene, wood, plywood, plasterboard, asbestos cement sheets, fibre-board and hardboard. |
