摘要 PURPOSE: To provide a liquid crystal(LC) display device capable of eliminating the gradation inversion of anti-visual angle direction in a halftone display state by impressing voltage close to the threshold voltage of LC of the LC and displaying an image of high quality. CONSTITUTION: At least one of optical phase difference plates 2, 3 in which a direction of a main refractive index nb parallel with the normal direction of a surface and a direction of a main refractive index nc or na in the surface are clockwisely or counter-clockwisely inclined around a direction of a negative refractive index anisotropy (na=nc>nb) and a main refractive index na or nc is arranged between a liquid crystal display element 1 constituted of sealing an LC layer 8 between a pair of electrode substrates 6, 7 and a pair of polarizers 4, 5 arranged on both the sides of the element 1. A pretilt angle formed by the major axis of LC molecules in the layer 8 and orientation films 11, 14 or an impression voltage value for displaying a half tone obtained by impressing voltage close to the threshold voltage of the LC is set up to a range capable of preventing the generation of the gradation inversion in the anti-visual angle direction at the time of displaying the half tone.
