Mono-o-t-butylated cresols are separated from a distillate fraction of the isobutylation product of a mixture of m- and p-cresols which contain as impurities inter alia other substituted phenols by treating the distillate fraction with an aqueous solution of an alkali metal hydroxide and separating the mono-o-t-butylated cresols from the alkaline solution. The desired t-butylated cresols may be obtained from the alkaline solutions by extraction with aromatic hydrocarbons or by acidification.</p> |
