A method of jointing, repairing and making connections to pipes includes the use of two stamped metal casings 22, 23 which together form a cylinder having a junction line lying in a plane at an angle to the longitudinal axis of the cylinder, the joining of the two casings or parts being effected by outwardly directed flanges 24 along the edges of one part which engage in guides 25 extending along the edges of the other part, the two parts having inwardly directed indentations 26 which, when the cylinder is assembled around the pipe, space the cylinder from the pipe. The ends of the cylinder are sealed with putty and a sealant passed in through orifices 27. The sealant may be asphalt, ooal tar, elastomeric material or thermosetting resin; the Specification gives examples of the latter two types. The assembly may be coated with a corrosion-resistant insulating coating. Screws may be provided to achieve electrically conducting contact between pipe and cylinder. When the cylinder is used to join two pipes, glass fibre tape (28, Fig. 4, not shown) is applied to the joint and the pipes preheated. When a hole or crack in a pipe is to be sealed the hole is sealed off by a temporary stopping and the pipe preheated before the cylinder is applied. A cylinder for tapping off from a pipe (Fig. 5, not shown) has a punch-type " tee " (32) welded to one part. The punch or die is operated after the void between cylinder and pipe has been filled and the sealant has set. |
