Zirconium, hafnium, titanium, niobium and tantalum and their alloys are comminuted while maintaining the hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen at a minimum, by continuously injecting liquid nitrogen or argon into the grinding mass via pipe 61. The apparatus comprises hammer mills 13, 15, 17, Fig. 1, fed via a hopper 21 and feeder 19, with screens 41, and a manifold 53.The temperature of each mill is taken by thermocouples 71. The ground material is collected in a hopper 36.
