The injector (40) is so designed that part of the injected fuel impacts the valve disk (24) when the inlet valve (20) is open. The injector uses two additional ports so that the fuel spray (142) leaving these ports is directed onto the valve disk (24) as specified. In this way, the fuel spray flushes the valve out to prevent or largely reduce any hydrocarbon deposition on the valve surfaces with resulting benefits in terms of vehicle performance.
