PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image recorder for recording high quality images speedily. SOLUTION: An ink jet printer 10 has an infrared sensor 26 set to the side face of a carriage 12. The density on a platen is detected by the infrared sensor 26 when the carriage 12 is scanned together with a recording head 14 during printing. Based on the density detected a mask for allowing a control unit 50 to pass/not to pass a printing signal is formed. Hence, even when a paper deviates in a horizontal scanning direction, the platen is prevented from being contaminated because ink drops are prevented from being discharged onto the platen. Since the infrared sensor 26 is set to the upstream side in a transfer direction with respect to a printing region of the recording head 14, a width of the paper can be detected before printing by simply transferring the paper to the downstream side in the transfer direction (without being transferred in the opposite direction), thus enabling speedy imaging.
