A feed for ruminant animals comprises as a synthetic source of nitrogen urea, biuret, ammonium carbonate, ammonium phosphate, ammonium acetate or glycine and an unsaturated aliphatic compound containing at least one carbon to carbon double bond. The unsaturated aliphatic compound may be a hydrocarbon, a fatty acid (e.g. oleic, linolenic, linoleic, arachidonic and palmitoleic acids), a fatty acid ester, a fatty aldehyde, a fatty ketone, a water soluble salt (e.g. sodium) of a fatty acid or a vegetable or animal oil (e.g. split cottonseed oil). Other substances which may be present in the feed, include proteins, carbohydrates, minerals, valeric acid, leucine, isoleucine and molasses. The feed may be in a liquid form or in a solid block form. |
