PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance the print speed of a color image by making constant the carrying amount of recording sheets in the going path and the return path and making possible to print on a recording sheet during reciprocal carriage. SOLUTION: A pair of tension rollers 26 incorporating a torque limiter 33 is disposed on the side opposite to a pair of carrying rollers 23 holding a thermal head 24. At the time of printing an yellow image and a cyan image, a color thermal recording sheet 2 is carried in the sheet feed direction by means of the pair of tension rollers 26 and a DC motor 57 is idled appropriately by means of the torque limiter 33 depending on the carrying speed of the pair of carrying rollers 23. At the time of printing a magenta image, the color thermal recording sheet 2 is carried in the rewinding direction by means of the pair of carry rollers 23 and imparted with a back tension by means of the pair of tension rollers 26.
