PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize the longer service life than ever of an ink ribbon. SOLUTION: In a printer having a ribbon shifting mechanism for making the widthwise position of an ink ribbon to a recording head shiftable by tilting a ribbon cartridge housing the ink ribbon 44 therein, the ribbon shifting mechanism is so constituted as to allow to use bands 59A, 59B, 59C, 59D, 59E, 59F and 59G with the recording head by increasing the number of shifting steps under the condition that the ink ribbon is a single colored one as compared with that of a colored ink ribbon.
