PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a new use of an edible film which has not been used much except for wrapping e.g. medicine, or food, by utilizing the characteristics of non-toxicity and hydrophilicity or water absorbency thereof. SOLUTION: This edible film is characterized by comprising an edible component having antimicrobial activity and an edible film-forming organic polymer component and having a property of hydrate gelation by water absorption; wherein especially the edible component comprises at least one kind of agent selected from a crude medicine capable of being subjected to dispersion or extraction in/with water, the essence of the crude medicine and substance(s) isolated by extraction from the crude medicine, and more preferably, the crude medicine is selected from a vegetable gum or plant bodies such as tea leaves, eucalyptus leaves, perilla leaves and herbs, and the edible film itself or a packaged food obtained by wrapping food with the edible film can be used as a sustained-release antimicrobial agent for protecting e.g. the digestive organs including the oral cavity, the skin surface from the attack of pathogenic bacterium. |
